05/2013 - San Diego AirCooled Pays Homage To One Of Their Own

This year San Diego Aircooled lost one of their own WILLIAM CAIRNS SPROTT JR. But in the spirit of this Aircooled family he was not forgotten at this years Aircooled Fiesta.

WILLIAM CAIRNS SPROTT JR. Born in Oakland, Ca. June 16, 1929.,

gently passed away Wednesday, April 03, 2013 at the V. A. Hospital in La Jolla, Ca. He was 83 years old.

His parents, William and Georgina Sprott immigrated from Glasgow, Scotland.

Bill served in both the Marines and the Army. He served in Korea where he was severely wounded (September 2, 1951) when a grenade landed in his foxhole. During his service in Korea, Bill was awarded a Purple Heart and a Korea Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars.

After returning home from the war, Bill raced Sprint cars. He belonged to a car club, SWANX, when he lived in the Bay Area.

Bill moved down to San Diego, to live with his daughter, Becky, and her family: her husband ,Tommy, and their children, Sarah and Christopher in 1991. He never lost his love for racing and became a member of SCAT, where he slalom-raced his 1970 Volkswagen Beetle at Qualcomm Stadium until a shoulder injury he sustained as a teenager began bothering him again. However, he still attended almost every race afterward. His job was to ensure that everyone was entered and processed for the race properly. He took his job very seriously and was pleased and proud that he received many compliments regarding how well he did, both from members of SCAT, and also members from the other car clubs.

Bill also belonged to another car club, The San Diego Air cooled car club. They meet every Tuesday evening in Chula Vista, Ca. He enjoyed both the racing itself, and all of his racing car-enthusiast buddies. Bill was awarded several trophies and was written about in a national car magazine!

Bill is survived by his 2 daughters, Becky Thompson and Karen Brandon. They are very happy to have had Bill in their lives – since he was their step-dad. Karen and Becky never considered Bill their step-dad, just their dad.

He also leaves behind his grandson, Christopher Thompson and his wife, Aidee, and their 2 sons, Tommy and William Thompson. Bill always enjoyed seeing them and hearing stories about the grandkids and great-grandkids.

The last member of his family, his cat Frieda, was taken by the "Adopt-A- Pet Program" with Petsmart. They are a "no-kill" organization, so that Frieda will be safe, and hopefully she will "adopt" a new family soon. We know Bill would be pleased.

Bill will be missed!
